Christian Gross: The second goal killed us off

Christian Gross reflected on his first game in charge of the Royal Blues away to Hertha on Saturday (2/1). Hertha coach Bruno Labbadia and Alessandro Schöpf also spoke to the media after the game.

Christian Gross

Christian Gross:

The first 30-40 minutes were okay, but ultimately Hertha deserved to win the game. The second goal killed us off today – we weren’t the same after that. We need to be more clinical in front of goal, because we won’t have as many chances as we had today in future games, so we have to use these opportunities. After the game, I told my players that they can’t leave the stadium with their heads down. Our full focus must now be on the Hoffenheim game.

Bruno Labbadia:

We had high hopes for today’s game, so it’s great that we could kick off the year with a win. The team needed a result like this. We didn’t start great and it was a hard-fought affair. As the game progressed, we grew in confidence and deserved to win it.

Alessandro Schöpf:

We had two or three good chances in the first half, which, unfortunately, we didn’t take. Hertha only had a few chances and took them. Their first goal from a throw-in came without almost any resistance from us. Of course we aren’t full of confidence after such a long winless run. We’re not able to come from behind at the moment. Christian Gross is trying to give us some positive energy. I’m so sorry for our fans, who have been waiting so long for a win.
