Daniel Caligiuri: We have to keep on working

The Royal Blues had the better chances, but couldn’t force a winner in the derby. Daniel Caligiuri, David Wagner and captain Alex Nübel were all frustrated with the final score, although they were pleased with the performance.

David Wagner:

It was – apart from the lack of goals – an exciting derby. The lads played with a lot of intensity and did really well. We put a lot of energy into the game. Our performance in the first half was excellent and I’m pleased with how we did in the second half mainly. We had the better chances over the course of the whole game. We’re pleased with our display, but a bit disappointed with the result. To be honest, I can’t be blamed for the fact that we didn’t score today. We didn’t convert our chances, although we are heading in the right direction. We can’t forget that they are a good team. You have to be confident to press them as high as we did. Our attack will be criticised because we didn’t score, but we were unlucky with the two shots off the woodwork. Hitz was good in the one-on-one situations. Rabbi scored in Leipzig, but not today – that’s all part of his development.

Lucien Favre:

It was a difficult game for us. Schalke pressed us with a lot of intensity. It was difficult for us to get the ball across the pitch. We were happy with it being 0-0 at the break. They had two big chances. We improved after the break and finally started to play football and create chances. We have to accept the 0-0 at the end, although we wouldn’t have taken that before the game.

Alexander Nübel:

We played a great game and have improved from a week ago. Because of our good performance, we aren’t too disappointed, but of course it is tough not win, especially seeing as we had a lot of very good chances in the first half. We usually come into a game well and get into it through our tackling. It is annoying that we hit the woodwork twice, a chance like that can sometimes go in. You could see that we were the dominant team, we tackled with aggression. We defended well as a team and hardly let BVB have a sniff. Unfortunately we just couldn’t score.

Daniel Caligiuri:

If you look at the whole match, then we deserved to win. We were really good in the first half. If we had scored once, we’d have won. Of course, we are a bit disappointed, but against Hoffenheim they countered twice and we lost, so we are grateful for the point. With a bit of luck in the first half, we go ahead, and then we all know what happens in the stadium. We have to keep on working, sometime our luck will return and we will win games again.
