Daniel Caligiuri: Scratch, bite and fight!

Schalke’s bad run of form continues, as taking into account Saturday’s result, the side have now gone eleven Bundesliga games without a win. “Every player is aware of the situation we find ourselves in,” said Daniel Caligiuri, who captained the side against Werder Bremen as he had in the matches before the restart.

The winger knows that the team did not play at their best in the first half. “Our first half was not a good one,“ said the 32-year-old. “We started the match really badly, and couldn’t get a grip on the game.”

The tactical plan had stated that in the current situation, getting a clean sheet was the top priority. “But then, we made another individual error that led to us conceding,” said Caligiuri.

Every player is aware of the situation we find ourselves in.

The midfielder admits that teammate Jean-Clair Todibo, who was dispossessed by Werder Bremen, did contribute to Schalke conceding, but stresses he was not singling the Spaniard out for blame. “I don’t want to and I won’t attack Jean-Clair directly. Sure, he lost the ball and it led to the goal, but last week someone else did that and the week before it was another person. We simply can’t allow that to happen to us,” explains Caligiuri.

Now it’s important to keep working hard, working together and looking ahead. As Caligiuri says: “Now it’s time to scratch, bite and fight!”
