Daniel Caligiuri: We set up cleverly and earned the win

Thanks to an incredible team performance, FC Schalke celebrated a well-deserved 2-1 win over Werder Bremen, as some Knappen commented on after the game. We collected all the quotes after the game.

Daniel Caligiuri

David Wagner:

There weren’t very many chances in the box during the first half, but we dominated the ball. We just struggled to get through because Werder were so organised. I was really pleased with how we played in the second half though, we fought really well. We scored a great second goal through Benito Raman then we kept them fairly quiet. Unfortunately, we didn’t use the chances we had on the break to our advantage and Bremen got back into it. Despite the luck we had in certain situations though, I thought we earned our victory, no one can deny us that.

Florian Kohfeldt:

We wanted to increase our intensity right from the start but we didn’t do that today. We conceded two goals that could have been easily avoided. We have to take responsibility for the fact that we didn’t show up for 60 minutes of the game and now we are in a difficult spot, but we have to get through it.

Benito Raman:

I’ve been getting better and better every week since the DFB-Pokal game against Bielefeld. With a goal today I’ve rewarded myself for all the hard work I’ve been doing in the last few weeks. In my opinion, there was no foul leading up to my goal either and everybody saw that. We played really well right until the end today and we had to to stop Bremen from grabbing their second goal.

Daniel Caligiuri:

It was noticeable right from the start that we wanted to win here today. We had some luck in the end, but we got the victory together. We deserved to take the lead in the first half, but we knew the second half would be different. When Bremen scored their first goal, the stadium shook. We had chances to make it 3-0 but we have to be more consistent. In the end I’m happy with how the team performed, as it was how we got the win. We did better in the closing stages than we had done in the past couple of games and we kept the ball well – that’s another step in the right direction. I’m proud of the team.
