Daniel Caligiuri: We’ll take the point and improve on Tuesday

FC Schalke 04 had to settle for a 0-0 draw on Friday evening away at Hertha. David Wagner, Bastian Oczipka and Daniel Caligiuri were pleased with the reaction shown after the Bayern defeat, although they all bemoaned the team’s poor passing in the final third.

David Wagner:

It was a difficult away game as we’d expected. We faced a side that focused on defending. We managed to defend their counter attacks well. We didn’t use the space that was given to us well enough though. We also lost possession a lot due to some sloppy passing. We showed a good reaction to the Bayern game and kept a clean sheet. We’ll take the point and move forwards now.

Jürgen Klinsmann:

For us it is a good point, because every point helps us climb the table. We played against a very well organised team, who deserve to be playing in the top half of the table. It was an intense game. We were close to scoring near the end of the match a couple times, but I’ll take the result in the end.

Bastian Oczipka:

Hertha sat back – as we thought they would – and made it difficult for us to get in behind. We also knew that they would want to create chances on the break, which we defended well across the 90 minutes. We failed to create much going forwards ourselves though. We wanted to bounce back after the Bayern game and we did just that. We did everything well apart from not scoring a goal. Our combination play wasn’t bad, but we were just lacking that final pass. We had a couple of moments where we could have nicked it, but a 0-0 draw is a fair result. We’re back at home on Tuesday so we’ll get a boost from that. Our fans will push us on and we will hope to reward them with some goals.

Daniel Caligiuri:

It was the sort of scrappy game we were expecting. We knew that Hertha would keep compact and try and hit us on the counter. Especially in the first half, we should have moved the ball around quicker and got in behind the Hertha defence a lot more often. We were too static, and in the second half we didn’t make the most of our chances. It was important for us to show that we’ve reacted to the Bayern result. We kept a clean sheet, but of course we would have preferred to win. We will take the point and hope that we can do better in the DFB-Pokal on Tuesday. The gaffer will help us to prepare perfectly for that game.
