David Wagner: We have to better in the final third

FC Schalke 04 and Hertha BSC have several things in common after two games of the new Bundesliga season: they both have a new coach, share the same club colours and have one point from the first two matchdays. Schalke will be hoping to pick up their first win of the Bundesliga campaign on Saturday (31/8. 15:30 CEST). “If we play to our best and the fans are as loud as against Bayern, we will have a great chance of winning,” said head coach David Wagner.

“We are playing at home and will have our fans’ support to drive us on,” commented the 47-year-old, who was quick to stress that his side are only focusing on themselves not the opponents ahead of the game.

The Royal Blues also need to be more relaxed in possession, according to Wagner. “Our calmness on the ball was the key to our best phase against Bayern. We need to be better in the final third too.” Wagner thinks the side from the capital are at a similar level to S04, adding: “They are a team that we can handle – they have a lot of new faces too.”

Nastasic out, Ozan Kabak available

Wagner will be without Matija Nastasic for tomorrow’s game. The defender is out with an infection. Jonas Carls and Rabbi Matondo will also both miss the game as they are recovering from their respective injuries. “Everybody else will take place in the final training session,” confirmed Wagner.

Ozan Kabak could be included in a squad for the first time against Hertha. “If the final training sessions goes well for him, he could be involved for the first time since his foot injury,” reported Wagner, who also remarked: “He’s even more likely to be there with Mati not available.”
