David Wagner: A disappointing evening for us

David Wagner and Werder head coach Florian Kohfeldt discussed the match in a digital press conference after the final whistle on Saturday (26/9). Captain Omar Mascarell also spoke to the media after the game in the VELTINS-Arena.

David Wagner:

It was a disappointing night for us. We didn’t play well during the first half. Before half-time, it was a closely-fought game with few chances. We then failed to defend on the set pieces and went behind. The second half was better. After the break, both Vedad and Nassim had a chance to get us back in the game, but unfortunately, we failed to take advantage of these chances. The game was over once we conceded the third goal.

Florian Kohfeldt:

It was a well-deserved win, which we earned due to our efforts in the first half and after the 65th minute. We played well for much of the game, and our intensity was good. The key tonight was definitely our set pieces, which we took full advantage of before half-time. During the second half, there was a short period in which we were a bit sloppy. If Schalke had scored to make it 2-1, then things could have gotten tight once again.

Omar Mascarell:

It’s not easy for us at the moment. The two first-half goals came from set-pieces. After the break we did better but the penalty secured the game for them. Our negative run is very long but we can’t think about that. We have to be positive and look ahead. Leipzig won’t be easy next week, but in football everything is possible – and that’s what we have to believe as a team.
