David Wagner: The lads are aware of the situation

David Wagner:

The game started badly for us with that unstoppable free kick. After that, we kept Augsburg at bay and created a clear-cut chance that we couldn’t take. We weren’t dangerous enough, especially considering how dominant we were. The second half wasn’t like the first – we were very tense. We weren’t able to create any chances at all. Conceding goals from individual errors is typical of the situation that we find ourselves in. Now we need to carry on working hard and support the lads so that they can play football with some confidence again. The goals we conceded speak for themselves.

We aren’t threatening enough and we’re not scoring enough of our chances. On top of that, we’re also making errors that are leading to goals. These are the key things that we need to improve. A lot of it is psychological. The lads are aware of the current situation, especially when you go behind early on.

Heiko Herrlich:

We tried to concentrate on ourselves and showed the lads what they can improve on with some video analysis. They put all of that into practice today. We wanted to be compact and strong at the back, but continuously put Schalke under pressure, which we managed to do today. Our biggest flaw today was that when we had the ball we tended to lose it too much especially in the first half. Playing in an empty stadium was a very strange feeling. I can’t wait for the fans to return, as football lives off the atmosphere the fans create.

Daniel Caligiuri:

We were aggressive from the start. We conceded a free kick after a mistake. We can’t really do anything about Eduard Löwen’s free kick so early on. We can’t lose our heads in the coming games. We know that things are going well at the moment and we need to stay positive. We want to play like we did in the Hinrunde and take our chances again. The games are coming thick and fast – we will analyse today and then start preparing for Düsseldorf, with the aim to win there.
