David Wagner: Both teams responded well

It was a roller coaster of emotions at the VELTINS-Arena. Head coaches David Wagner and Friedhelm Funkel spoke about the 3-3 draw after the game. Captain Alexander Nübel and ex-Fortuna palyer Benito Raman were also put to the microphone.

David Wagner:

“The boys reacted well every time the opposition equalised. Just as Düsseldorf did every time we took the lead. That was the story of the afternoon. However, we had two or three more opportunities to score even more. Unfortunately we failed to take these chances. Overall it was a good game from us. We had lots of possession and created a number of opportunities. However you can also argue that we made it too easy for them to score their second and third goals.”

Friedhelm Funkel:

“It was a fantastic game to watch and my team did really well. Coming from behind on three occasions against Schalke speaks volumes about our mentality. Overall we deserved to take away a point because we never gave up. We’re very happy with the result.”

Alexander Nübel:

“The draw is difficult to take. We didn’t lose, but it there was more to it than that. They had three chances and scored three goals. Other than that, they didn’t really threaten my goal. It wasn’t a good afternoon for me. Düsseldorf were very efficient, however we didn’t defend well for their second and third goals.“

Benito Raman:

“It was a great game for the neutrals, but unfortunately not for us. We created enough chances to win the game but we threw away the lead three times. It’s very annoying but this happens sometimes in football. So soon after the final whistle I have no explanation for it. However, we need to accept the result and learn from our mistakes.”
