Dimitrios Grammozis: Too many gifts in the second half

Both coaches agreed that Schalke made life tough for Wolfsburg in the first half on Saturday (13/3), however the hosts were clearly the dominant side after the break. Shkodran Mustafi also spoke to the media after the final whistle.

Dimitrios Grammozis

Dimitrios Grammozis:

Today’s result is very sobering for us. We had high hopes for the game and started well, only allowing VfL a few chances. The unlucky own goal for 1-0 came from nowhere. Just before that, we almost had a few good three-on-two chances but we were lacking that final pass. Instead, we then went behind and you could then see the effects the past few months have had on the players.

We gave them too many gifts in the second half and practically invited them to score. We made too many mistakes and were punished for it by a really good side. My players wanted it today – you could see that. Their attitudes were definitely spot on. However, we aren’t capable right now of defending so well and keeping our opponents at bay for a full game. We will go home now, analyse the match, recover and then start our preparations for our next opponents.

Oliver Glasner:

We struggled a bit in the first half. Things weren’t going so smoothly but we were lucky to go ahead thanks to an own goal. We then scored great goals after winning possession back in the second half. We got some fluency back into our game after the second and third goals. I think we deserved to win ultimately. I’m pleased that we had five different goalscorers too – that shows that our biggest strength is the closeness of our team.

Shkodran Mustafi:

I think we did really well without the ball in the first half and put in an organised performance. We were a little bit hectic on the ball once winning it back a few times though. We often make the wrong decision when we are in the final third. It was really tough for us after my own goal – taking the lead gave Wolfsburg an extra confidence boost. We simply made too many mistakes after the break and VfL punished us clinically. We couldn’t keep up the intensity from the first half.
