Domenico Tedesco: Keep possession and make use of our chances

When asked about Bayer Leverkusen, Domenico was full of praise for the Bundesliga high-flyers. “They’re one of the best teams in Germany at the moment,” said the 32-year-old ahead of the clash on Sunday at the BayArena. “We’ll have to be at our best to come away with something.”

Leverkusen deadly on the break

To say that they’re unbeatable at home, however, would be a false statement. Hertha Berlin made the trip to the BayArena two weeks ago and came away with a 2-0 win. The crucial thing is to remain organised in defence and avoid giving the ball away, Tedesco emphasises. “Leverkusen are extremely dangerous when they win the ball back.”

“They’re very quick, technically strong and dangerous in front of goal,” says the coach. Tedesco is quick to point out the strengths of his own side though, who have been very focused in training this week in the lead up to the game. “We will get our chances in Leverkusen. We then have to make use of them.”
The idea that Schalke could leapfrog Leverkusen in the Bundesliga standings with a win doesn’t mean anything to Tedesco, however. “As always, I’m not looking at the table. It’s served us well so far to just take each training session and each game as they come. We’re going to keep doing that. The only time the table matters is after matchday 34,” emphasises Tedesco.

Leon Goretzka has pain in his foot

Schalke will be able to call upon the services of Max Meyer again this weekend, who had to miss out last week due to a suspension. On the other hand, Pablo Insua (rehab after heart surgery) and Weston McKennie (rehab after partial MCL tear).

The Royal Blues will also be without Abdul Rahman Baba and Cedric Teuchert this weekend. “Baba still needs time to recover after his long term injury,” says the coach. “And Cedi has picked up a knee problem after all the energy he’s exerted over the last few weeks.” It’s not anything drastic, explains the 32-year-old and adds that the new arrival from Nuremberg won’t be out for long.

Whether Leon Goretzka is able to play is yet to be decided. The Germany international has been limited in training all week due to pain in his foot.
