Domenico Tedesco: Few, but decent chances

Domenico Tedesco talked about his team executing his game plan well at the post-match press conference, while his opposite number Ralf Rangnick spoke of a fair draw. We also gathered the thoughts of Benjamin Stambouli and Weston McKennie in the mixed zone at the Red Bull Arena following Sunday’s 0-0 draw.

Domenico Tedesco

Domenico Tedesco:

We didn’t want to shoot ourselves in the foot against a very good attacking side. Even though it’s tempting to go and play football in certain areas of the pitch, we avoided it because we know that Leipzig can counter very effectively. We didn’t have as many chances as we did against Bremen or Galatasaray, but we still had two decent ones through Breel Embolo and Weston McKennie. However, unlike the 0-0 draw in Istanbul, three points would have flattered us today.

Ralf Rangnick:

It was the high-intensity and physical game we were expecting. When you consider that both sides played in Europe during the week, it’s by no means the worst 0-0 you’ve seen. We were pushing to nick the win in the final half hour or so, but we were just lacking that final ball or decision. I think it’s a fair draw in the end.

Benjamin Stambouli:

I’m happy with a point. It’s always been tricky against Leipzig in the past and playing a European away game during the week certainly doesn’t help. It’s a little frustrating not to have taken our chances, but it’s important that we’re still creating them. It would be more worrying if that wasn’t the case. We’re on the right path and will no doubt show our quality in front of goal again soon.

Weston McKennie:

We hadn’t picked up any points in Leipzig before today, so a draw isn’t the worst result in the world. We’re playing decent football of late and really ought to have won in Istanbul. It was a deserved draw today though against one of the league’s best home sides. We could have got the three points, but Leipzig had chances of their own too. After two goalless draws, we’re determined to go and win in Cologne and secure a place in the next round of the cup.
