Domenico Tedesco: A deserved win, but we have to be more effective on the break

There were plenty of happy Royal Blues after the 3-1 win in Stuttgart! Domenico Tedesco and Stuttgart coach Markus Weinzierl reflected on the game in the post-match press conference, as well as how their teams had fared in the first half of the season. Ralf Fährmann and Steven Skrzybski also gave their opinions. schalke04.de has summarised the quotes.

Domenico Tedesco:

We are delighted and relieved to get the win. We waited long enough for this and have worked hard for it too. The three points are deserved. If they had equalised just after half time, then it would have been a lot more difficult for us. We were a bit lucky in that scenario. Mistakes like the one Ralf Fährmann made can happen.

We controlled the game well in the first half. We waited long enough for this and have worked hard for it too. It would have been better if we could have taken one of our counter attacks and gone in at half-time with a two-goal lead. The game was open for a long time. They were better at the start of the second half and tried to get more shots away in the second half. Just like in the first half, we had a number of chances on the counter. We should have taken these better again.

Markus Weinzierl:

We lost a game today that we shouldn’t have lost. Erik Thommy had a good chance at the start of the game. If he had taken it, we would have been 1-0 up, but instead went behind soon after. Our defence didn’t look good for the goal. The turning point was in the 47th minute, when Nicolas Gonzalez missed a golden opportunity. If we had equalised, the game could have ended up like our win over Hertha BSC last week. We didn’t give up once we were 2-0 down and really did our best to turn the game around. We managed to get one back, but didn’t have enough in us to get a point.

Ralf Fährmann:

Our first half of the Bundesliga season was very poor. We don’t need to say anything more than that. Therefore we are happy that we can now go into the winter break on the back of a win. I think that a 3-1 win was a fair result. We worked well as a team today. Sometimes you have luck on your side, other times you are unlucky – I was definitely lucky in the 48th minute today.

Steven Skrzybski:

We started today’s game well and unlike recent games, took our chances. I am delighted to get another goal today. We were quite lucky that Stuttgart didn’t make it 1-1 just after the break. A 3-1 win in our last game before the winter break is a good feeling. We are still aware that our first half of the season has been poor though. That being said, we can’t forget that we’re in the last 16 of both cup competitions.
