Domenico Tedesco: The game could have panned out very differently

Domenico Tedesco was honest after the final whistle in Mainz: the win was a lucky one. We noted down what he and his opposite number, Sandro Schwarz, had to say about the game.

Domenico Tedesco:

We played very differently in the first half compared to the second. In the first half, Mainz played well for two periods and defended well from the front. We wanted to try and prevent them from doing that as that’s one of their strengths. All in all, it wasn’t the best first half of football you’ll ever see as both sides were aggressive and hard-working,

In the second half, we played like we too were fighting relegation. We scored a crucial goal thanks to Daniel Caligiuri’s solo effort. In the closing stages, we defended well. Nothing more, nothing less. We can be honest with each other and say Mainz deserved to get something from the game but we held on.

Sandro Schwarz:

In the first half, both teams cancelled one another out. 0-0 at half-time was a fair reflection. At the start of the second half, we had chances to take the lead but Schalke managed to score with their first real chance. Looking at the game as a whole, this is a tough one to take. It’s an unfortunate evening for us.
