Domenico Tedesco: An ideal start

A happy Domenico Tedesco and a disappointed Hannes Wolf spoke after Schalke’s 2-0 victory this afternoon.

Domenico Tedesco:

We started very well. We wanted to move the ball and opponents through the middle and succeeding in doing so. It’s great to have got ourselves into a 2-0 lead quickly as it gave us a cushion. In the second half, we didn’t make the most of the situations we found ourselves in on the break. We worked on that all week on training as we couldn’t get the second against Hannover. It’s frustrating as we didn’t make the most of numerous scenarios to score a third. Our substitutes did very well and I’m full of praise for them. They defended very well when Stuttgart started to open up the game which isn’t easy to do. We decided to remain more compact rather than pressing in this game and it worked for us. I still think it’s important to focus on how well we did against a strong side who threw everything at us.

Hannes Wolf:

We knew that Schalke would come at us and we too wanted to defend on the front foot. We didn’t do that enough. Schalke managed to get through our defence a number of times. When we got the ball, we lost it again too quickly. It meant Schalke controlled the ball from the midfield. We knew about Naldo’s ability from set-pieces and marked the zones but he still managed to score. After the penalty it was always going to be tough. We had chances to score and Schalke had chances too. All in all, it was a disappointing day.
