Domenico Tedesco: I’m happy we got the three points

Domenico Tedesco and Manuel Baum looked back on the five goal thriller in the VELTINS Arena.

Domenico Tedesco jubelt gegen den FC Augsburg.

Domenico Tedesco:

We didn’t have a great first half but we restricted Augsburg as we know how they can be dangerous. If you watch Augsburg’s last few games, they cause issues on the break. By keeping hold of possession, we wanted to nullify Augsburg.

In the second half, our plan was very similar. When we scored the second goal straight after the break, we should have pushed on but Augsburg pressed us very well. They win a lot of aerial duels and 50/50s. It meant they had a lot more possession and it forced us to go long. We need to make sure that doesn’t happen in future.

The goals we conceded were almost slapstick. The one that made it 2-1 deflected off Guido Burgstaller’s head. The equaliser we failed to clear the ball properly but the penalty decision was correct. I’m happy we won against a tough team and we kept the three points in Gelsenkirchen!

Manuel Baum:

In the first half, we were very solid defensively. We conceded two chances at the start and end of the first half but that was it. Schalke made us pay for that by making it 1-0 just before the break. We gave them too much respect in possession. In the second half, after the second went in, we suddenly grew in confidence and deservedly came back into the game. It hurts that we’re going home empty handed. I think we deserved at least a point. I have to compliment my team for coming back into the game.
