Domenico Tedesco: "Should have made it 2-0"

Another late goal against Schalke at home, this time to make it 2-1. We wrote down the reaction from both coaches after Werder’s 2-1 win in the VELTINS-Arena.

Domenico Tedesco:

We did not play well in the first half. I think we approach games very differently away from home at the moment. We’re bolder away from home, win the ball back more and attack in numbers. At home, we’re more lethargic and today we didn’t exploit the man-marking in the midfield. We were lucky to be 1-0 up at the break, I must say.

The second half was a different story. Up until the 75th minute we played really well; we defended from the front and created a lot of chances. We should have rewarded ourselves and scored the second goal during this spell – that would have secured the win. After that, everything fell apart: We changed our formation after going down to ten men and couldn’t push forward any more. At this stage, you sometimes have to settle for a draw. It’s understandable to still want to win, of course, but our free kick should not have been played like that, and that led to their goal. We were naive at times and we have to improve – starting on Wednesday.

Florian Kohfeldt:

We are happy to be going home with the three points, not least because of the timing. The first half was an interesting 45 minutes, but I can understand why the fans might not have seen it that way. I was pleased to see us in control of the game at times. In the second half we wanted to press Schalke higher up the pitch, but that didn’t work well: Schalke really showed their quality then and we were lucky not to go 2 or 3-0 down. That would have killed the game. It was so important for us to turn things around at the end.
