Domenico Tedesco: A very tough moment for us all

Disappointed with the result and especially disappointed with their performance: after the 3-0 loss against Mainz, coach Domenico Tedesco and Bastian Oczipka spoke about the deserved defeat and were more than unhappy with Schalke’s display. schalke04.de presents the post-match reaction.

Domenico Tedesco

Domenico Tedesco:

It’s a very tough moment for us all. We shot ourselves in the foot today. Mainz were more aggressive, more present and quicker in all areas. Our opponents were superior, and with regards to that fact, the result is more than fair. Our performance was very bad, and I must let that sink in first. I fully understand the fans‘ reaction. They support us intensely and without fail. We have brilliant supporters who show good sensitivity. Today, their criticism is completely legitimate.

Sandro Schwarz:

We were very aggressive and clinical today, especially off the ball. We won the ball in advanced areas and were in good positions to capitalise. We were more dangerous in the final third and created more chances for ourselves – it is a fully deserved victory and I’m pleased with the performance. I’m very pleased with how the boys reacted to the three defeats in a row.

Bastian Oczipka:

It was silent in the dressing room after the game – everyone is sore. Our performance today wasn’t acceptable and we are very disappointed. To a certain extent, the first half wasn’t too bad because we created a few chances going forward, but after half time we didn’t stamp our authority on the game – you can’t afford to do that in Mainz.
