Domenico Tedesco: We only woke up with ten men

After Saturday’s (16/02) draw with SC Freiburg, Domenico Tedesco and Christian Streich reflected on the goalless draw. Bastian Oczipka and Rabbi Matondo also gave their views after the game. schalke04.de has summarised all of the post-match reactions.

Domenico Tedesco

Domenico Tedesco:

When it was 11 v 11 we didn’t do enough. We wanted to run in behind a lot against them; however we lost the ball too much, which allowed them to play better. In the first 40 minutes we played with too much fear. We have to change that and start trying to take players on again. We only really woke up when we went down to ten. Our mentality was spot on then and we won a lot of important tackles. Despite that, we didn’t look like scoring, so 0-0 was unfortunately a fair result.

Christian Streich:

We started the game well, but failed to do much in the final third – our final ball wasn’t good enough. It’s not easy to play against ten men. Our tactics worked well and we made three good chances for ourselves that we didn’t take. We had to make sure that we didn’t let them play on the counter. The second yellow for Christian Günter was a real shame, as I don’t think he should have been booked. We didn’t score today, so we had to make sure that we didn’t concede – as then you will lose a game. Therefore it ended 0-0.

Bastian Oczipka:

We had high hopes ahead of today’s game – we desperately wanted to win in front of our own fans. It’s not easy to play more than a half with one less man though. We didn’t play well against Borussia Mönchengladbach with ten men. Today we wanted to keep them away from our goal. We were missing a little something in the final third. The way the game went, we have to be satisfied with the point.

Rabbi Matondo:

We showed a good mentality after going a man down. We fought hard. It was a tough game for us in the second half because we had a man less. I think we did well as a team. Obviously Freiburg had their chances, but all in all we defended pretty well. We had our moments in attack too. I managed to get a shot off myself, but unfortunately spurned the chance. Now we face a big test in the Champions League. We need to recover quickly in order to be fresh for the match against Manchester City. I’m looking forward to playing against my old club.
