Familiar faces on both sides

The Royal Blues will open the 2020/21 Bundesliga season away at record champions Bayern München on Friday (18.9, 20:30 CEST). Ahead of the match, schalke04.de has pulled together some interesting facts and figures to the fixture.

Leon Goretzka und Leroy Sané

Treble winners undefeated in last 30 competitive games

Bayern are coming off the backs of a historic season, after winning the treble for the second time in club history. In the Champions League, head coach Hansi Flick’s side went undefeated on the way to beating Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in the final. The record German champions were also in impressive form in the Bundesliga. After a difficult start to the season, Bayern were unstoppable after the winter break, picking up 49 out of a possible 51 points. The Bavarians also repeated as DFB-Pokal champions, defeating Bayer Leverkusen 4-2 in the final. Currently, Bayern are unbeaten in their last 30 competitive matches (W29, D1). Flick’s men have won all of their last 21 games.

04 former Royal Blues at FCB

Leroy Sané, Manuel Neuer, Leon Goretzka and Alexander Nübel are four former Royal Blues who have all made the move to Munich. Schalke’s current squad features two players who previously also ran out for FCB: Sebastian Rudy and Alessandro Schöpf.

Lewandowski eyeing up a Schalke record holder

Bayern’s goal-getter Robert Lewandowski has scored on each of the last five opening matchdays. The Poland international is the first player to manage this feat in the Bundesliga. In total, the striker has scored on six different occasions on opening day (nine goals in total). Should the 32-year-old find the back of the net against Schalke, he would equal the current record held by S04 legend, Klaus Fischer.

Ibisevic can draw level with Salou

Vedad Ibisevic is also on the cusp of setting a new league record. If the Bosnian manages to score for Schalke, he would become only the second foreign-born player to score for five different Bundesliga clubs (after Bachirou Salou).
