Fight for one another on the pitch!

After the extremely disappointing past few weeks on the pitch, the Royal Blues face SV Werder Bremen on Friday night (8/3, 20:30 CET). Head coach Domenico Tedesco wants to focus on the strengths the team had last season.

“In our situation, the main thing that matters is our players’ character,” stated Tedesco. “We have often won games because of this – and it’s more important now than ever that we do so again.”

The performance on the day will be the most important thing.

The 33-year-old made it clear that the club couldn’t just go back to normal day-to-day business after losing 4-0 to Fortuna Düsseldorf. The head coach hinted that there will be several changes to the team for the match in Bremen, although wouldn’t reveal them: “We obviously have a few ideas of how to change the team,” he said, “but the performance on the day will be the most important thing.”

McKennie and Oczipka available again

The aim in Bremen will be to pay back the fans’ support with plenty of fight and passion. “We got ourselves into this mess and now have to get ourselves back out of it together,” stated Tedesco.

The head coach has Weston McKennie and Bastian Oczipka available for selection again. McKennie missed out again Düsseldorf with muscular problems, while Oczipka had a bruised toe. Daniel Caligiuri, who has a small issue with his groin, is also available as well as Breel Embolo.

Get back on track together

The upcoming opponents are, according to Tedesco, “an intelligent football side”. “Their players often make the right decisions and are incredibly dangerous on the counter-attack,” praised Tedesco. Nevertheless, S04 will be focusing on themselves primarily ahead of the game. “I am not the kind of person to point the finger at anyone else or to try and blame things that would be too easy.” He is also convinced “that we will get back on track together”. Every team has different groups within it, but it’s vital that “everybody fights for one another on the pitch! We have shown this fight before – and we have to do it again now!”
