Final home game of the season against Frankfurt

FC Schalke 04 will take on Eintracht Frankfurt in their final match at the VELTINS-Arena this season on Saturday (15/5, 15:30 CEST). Head coach Dimitrios Grammozis is expecting a tough match.

The Royal Blues have been quarantining in their training camp, as per DFL regulations, since Tuesday (11/5). “It’s obviously a challenge to have another training camp at this stage of the season – for all teams, not just us,” said the 42-year-old. “We’ve got great conditions to work in here, though. All the staff here at the hotel give us a smile each morning behind their masks.”

The three players who tested positive for Covid-19 ahead of the Hertha game are doing well, reported Grammozis. “I speak to the lads regularly on the phone.” The trio are all self-isolating at home in accordance with the guidelines. Four other players that were in contact group 1 are also in quarantine.

Kolasinac suspended, Uth returns from his ban

Grammozis has a similar squad available to him against Frankfurt. One player who will miss out is Sead Kolasinac. The Bosnian picked up his fifth yellow card of the season in the Hertha match and is now suspended. Mark Uth, on the other hand, is available again after being banned for the midweek fixture.

The Greek coach wants Schalke to put in a good performance against Eintracht Frankfurt, who are sat in fifth looking to qualify for the Champions League for the first time in their history. “We obviously don’t have a lot of confidence right now. The team has been losing games for a year now. Despite this, our aim is to pick up as many points as we can in the final two games,” stressed Grammozis. Even though relegation has already been confirmed, he doesn’t want his players to play like it. “The lads aren’t given us the feeling that they need an extra push. They are committed in training and want to put things we’ve worked on into practice in games.”

Frankfurt chasing the Champions League

Schalke’s head coach described the opponents as “an aggressive side, who look to take players on. They are good at doing this with the confidence they have. Frankfurt are a fantastic side that will continue to fight for a Champions League spot until the end of the season.”
