First a party on the team bus, then celebrations with the fans

“Derby winners, derby winners!” was the chant coming from the away dressing room even an hour after the full-time whistle on Saturday. In the midst of the celebrations was Daniel Caligiuri, who got himself on the scoresheet twice. When asked what plans he had for the evening, the 31 year old replied, “We’ll see. But for sure there will be two or three beers involved!”

Shortly later there was indeed fresh Veltins. The team bus was transformed into a party room. Breel Embolo enjoyed a few classic Royal Blue songs and Benjamin Stambouli was particularly pleased to hear his favourite club chant, “We are Schalke!” Ralf Fährmann drummed on the bus windows throughout, heightening the mood and celebrations even further.

We will enjoy the victory until Monday.

The party continued after to Royal Blues returned to Gelsenkirchen. Spontaneously, the team decided to celebrate at Bosch, the club’s pub-restaurant at Glückauf-Kampfbahn, the first ever stadium of the club. Once again, cries of “derby winners, derby winners!” rang out, as Weston McKennie and his teammates danced on the tables along with supporters.

“We will enjoy this victory until Monday,” said Breel Embolo. “Then we will start preparations for the important home game against FC Augsburg. In that game, we have to give the same performance as we did in the derby. If we do that, the points will stay in Gelsenkirchen.” If so, the Royal Blue fans will have a first home Bundesliga victory in more than three months to celebrate. Tickets are still available for the clash, which will take place on Sunday (5/5, 13:30 CEST).
