Thomas Reis: A day to forget

No one was in denial after the full-time whistle at the Europa-Park Stadion on Sunday (23/04): SC Freiburg’s 4-0 win was thoroughly deserved. schalke04.de rounds up the key quotes as Thomas Reis, Christian Streich, Simone Terodde and Alexander Schwolow.

Thomas Reis:

We made it too easy for a good opponent, and then you end up on the end of a scoreline like that. We wanted to be aggressive and knew that we would end up defending man-to-man in a number of situations. We won those battles last week against Hertha, but we lost crucial ones this time. We also made too many technical mistakes in possession. We can almost consider ourselves lucky to only have lost 4-0, as Freiburg had plenty of other good chances. Even just from the 88th minute alone was incredibly sloppy from us.

All in all, it was a day to forget. Everyone has to look in the mirror after today. The defeat hurts, but we will move on. We want to and have to be better against Werder Bremen and show a different side to ourselves. We managed that against Berlin already. It’s important that whenever we fall down, we get back up again. The team has already shown before that they have that mentality. Everything is still to play for in the relegation battle.

Christian Streich:

We played well, worked well and were physical. We didn’t give much away defensively. My team knew what to expect, and they were resolute. That’s the reason we were able to win. Sometimes it just goes your way, and we managed to create a lot of chances. It’s important that we keep a clear head now.

Simon Terodde:

It’s a deserved defeat and scoreline. Freiburg could even have won by more. It was a disappointing performance, while our opponents played really well. We wanted to go after them in the second half at 2-0 down, but we ended up letting in a third straightaway. It will take us some time to digest the result, but it’s important that we shift our focus to the upcoming matches, as tough as that is after a 4-0 defeat. However, we welcome Werder Bremen to the VELTINS-Arena on Saturday and have to produce a very different performance.

Alexander Schwolow:

We were determined to get a result today, but it wasn’t to be. We fell short in every department. Everyone was up for it, but it just didn’t happen, which is obviously painful. We need to play like we did in our last home game against Hertha when we take on Werder. We looked like a very different team compared to today. We need to analyse this match, but then we will move on. We still have five games to go, and I’m convinced that we will achieve our goal.
