Thomas Reis: We defended carelessly for the first goal

Schalke were unable to pick up any points on Sunday evening (30/10) and lost 2-0 against SC Freiburg. Head coach Thomas Reis as well as Cedric Brunner and Sebastian Polter spoke to the media after the game at the VELTINS Arena.

Thomas Reis:

We needed the first few minutes to implement our pressing, but it didn’t work too well. After that we adjusted and then came into the game more and were able to force Freiburg to turn to long balls. We knew that they wanted to move the ball a lot from side to side, which is what we had problems with initially. It is really annoying when you play messily when trying to transition into attack and the final ball isn’t there. We could have created more chances. We defended carelessly for the first goal. We have to win that duel. We dropped back into the box and gave him the opportunity to have a shot on goal from a good position. In the second half, Freiburg kept us busy. The key moment was the penalty, which was very unlucky. I’m annoyed by the way it came about. I saw a team that put everything into the game. If we had managed to score, for example with the Tom Krauß chance, then it is possible that the game would’ve been more open. Finally, you have to say that it was not an undeserved win for Freiburg.

Christian Streich:

We didn’t know how Thomas Reis would set his side up. Before the game we spoke above all about mentality and attitude. We showed both of these from the first minute onwards. Schalke came into the game more at the end of the first half and in the last 15 minutes they had a big chance which Mark Flekken saved well. It was a good performance from the team and in my opinion also a deserved win.

Cedric Brunner:

It is unfortunately the case again that we conceded too naively and at inopportune moments. There is nothing more we can do than keep fighting and eventually be rewarded. We can’t allow ourselves to concede just before half time, we have to have the ability to get into the break at 0-0. Then, you can set up again, regroup and start the second half full of energy. The goal against us took the wind out of our sails.

Sebastian Polter:

At the beginning we were unable to put any pressure on the opposition’s back four. As a result, we had to defend a lot of long balls from Freiburg, which we defended well. After that we changed things a bit and had opportunities to counter, which we wanted to create. We then gave away a goal just before half time, which is always frustrating. For that, we were too passive for a moment, and allowed Grifo to shoot, which we can’t allow to happen.
