Robin Gosens: A very special moment
Robin Gosens was visibly pleased following Schalke’s 3-1 win away at his former club, 1. FC Union Berlin. “I’m incredibly proud of the team,” he said on Friday (11/9). The summer signing opened the scoring in the 25th minute, putting the Royal Blues on the path to picking up three important points in Berlin.
“Looking at the game as a whole, we deserved the win,” the 32-year-old said. From the start, the team had managed to put their game plan into action. “We were very compact and we much better on the ball than we were against Bayern. That’s exactly what we worked on in training this week, and we’d set out to be better in possession in Berlin,” he explained.
The fact that Gosens was able to score away at his former employers was also a “special moment” for the defender. When he saw the ball hit the back of the net, he spoke of having “mixed feelings.” Gosens’ time in Berlin had been particularly intense, following his move from Fiorentina. “Out of respect for my former club, I decided not to celebrate,” he said. “However, that doesn’t mean that I wasn’t happy about my goal.”
After all, the goal also represented a very special milestone for the 32-year-old: “My first goal for Schalke in the Bundesliga – for the club that I’ve loved since I was a kid.” What made Gosens even happier was the fact that he was able to help his team out by giving them the lead. “It’s a moment that I won’t ever forget,” he added.
My youth coach used to always say to me, ‘Hit it low and into the far corner.’ Fortunately, that worked out.
Another strong team performance
Another important factor in Schalke’s success on Friday night was the fact that they played as a team, as was also the case against Bayern the week prior. “We fought from the first second to the last. The players that then came in off the bench also gave us fresh energy,” Gosens said.
This represents exactly what head coach Miron Muslic wants to see from his side. “Our coach always calls them ‘game changers’ and not ‘substitutes,’ which I think is exactly right.” In Berlin on Friday night, this was demonstrated by Hee Chan Hwang’s assist and Maximilian Wöber’s goal, as both had come off the bench to make an impact.
The team will now look to bask in the victory for a couple of days, before shifting their focus to their upcoming game. “Over the next days we will work hard in order to also record a positive result against Elversberg. Our goal is to head into the international break with seven points,” Gosens said. The Royal Blues are set to host the promoted side at the VELTINS-Arena on Sunday (20/9) at 17:30 CEST.
