Miron Muslic: The game in Berlin will be much more direct, much more physical
FC Schalke 04 are set to open matchday 3 away at 1. FC Union Berlin on Friday (11/9) at 20:30 CEST. The Royal Blues are expecting to come up against a different challenge compared to last weekend’s home games against FC Bayern München. “The game in Berlin will be much more direct, much more physical,” predicted Miron Muslic.
However, the head coach is expecting to see his side display the same fighting spirit from their 0-0 draw with the record champions. “Very few people in Germany expected us to take a point off Bayern,” Muslic said. “We showed that we can pose problems for any opponent in the Bundesliga with our structure and our intense style of play.”
The team have since shifted their focus from the game against Bayern to their upcoming trip to Berlin. There, they will come up against an FCU side coached by Mauro Lustrinelli, who guided FC Thun to the Swiss title last season. Like Schalke, the Berliners have taken one point from their first two matches of the season. They started the season with a 3-3 draw at home against Eintracht Frankfurt, before falling to a 4-0 loss at Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

Muslic is expecting there to be a special atmosphere at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei. “Robin Gosens spoke at one of our team meetings and shared some insights with us. The support of their fans is very important to them, as is the case here at Schalke,” Muslic shared. Gosens had featured in 39 competitive games for the Berliners during the 2023/24 season. Goalkeeper Loris Karius was also once on the books at FCU.
Hwang to be in the matchday squad for the first time
Muslic will have nearly a full squad available for Friday’s trip to the capital. “We have two options at nearly every position, which provides us with plenty of possibilities,” he said, adding: “We are Schalke and we’re a Bundesliga club – everyone has to fight to earn their spot.”
Hee Chan Hwang, who joined the Royal Blues on a deadline-day loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers, is set to be included in his first matchday squad with the club. “He has settled in well during his first few days with us and will be able to share his experience with the team,” Muslic said.
The Royal Blues remain without Ron Schallenberg, who is serving the final game of his two-match suspension following his red card against Augsburg. The midfielder will be eligible to play again on matchday 4, when the Royal Blues welcome SV Elversberg to the VELTINS-Arena.
