Guido Burgstaller: A committed group

Last season, FC Schalke 04 ended the season in tenth place which the fans, the players and the powers that be were not pleased about. One year on, the mood in camp has drastically changed.

“We simply wanted to learn a lot from last season and improve on it. We can be proud of our achievements. No one predicted this before the season began. It’s an amazing feeling,” said Guido Burgstaller. In a 2-1 win in Augsburg, the Austria international was involved in his 15th goal this season. This time, he wasn’t on the scoresheet for what would have been his eleventh of the season but he crossed the ball in for Thilo Kehrer to score the crucial opening goal.

Burgstaller emphasised the huge role that the coaching staff have had to play in this season’s success. “What Domenico Tedesco and his staff have done is sensational,” praised the striker. “It’s also important that we work together as a team. We knew that from the first day. We are a committed team.”

No one expected this before the season started.

You could see the togetherness of the team in the celebrations after the final whistle in Augsburg. “It’s only fair that we have a little party to celebrate. We’ve deserved that,” said the 29-year-old. Burgstaller is pleased to reach the goal of Champions League football after a tiring season: “The pressure is off now. We’re confirmed to finish second now too!”

Schalke won’t be taking their final game of the season easily though as the Austria international knows all too well. “We want to win the game as we want to get revenge against Frankfurt after the DFB-Pokal game.”
