Guido Burgstaller: I didn’t doubt for a second we’d not win the derby

Though Guido Burgstaller was unable to get on the scoresheet like in reverse fixture this time around, the striker was one of the Knappen’s stand-out performers on Sunday in the 2-0 win. The Austria international hunted down every ball, fought for every challenge and continually was putting the team on the front. “I just wanted to win the game!” emphasised the 28-year-old.

During the game, Burgi had no concerns about how it was going to pan out.  “I didn’t think for a second during the game that we were going to lose the derby,” said the striker and added: “Every player on the pitch played with courage on fight. It’s a fully deserved win and down to the team’s overall performance. I’m delighted to give the fans the derby win they deserve.”

Despite the current standings in the table – Schalke are currently eight points clear of fifth place with four games to go – Burgstaller doesn’t want to discuss potential Champions League qualification. “The derby win was certainly a key win but nothing more than that,” he explained. “We’ve gone from game-to-game for the whole season and that’s served well so far so we’ll continue to do that in future.”

After the derby win, Schalke do not have long to recuperate ahead of Wednesday’s DFB-Pokal semi-final versus Eintracht Frankfurt. “I’m anticipating a hard-fought game and one we’ll have to be patient in. Frankfurt are having an excellent season and are a tricky opponent that will make it tough for us,” said Burgstaller. “However, the derby win will give us momentum. We want to reach the final in Berlin.”
