Guido Burgstaller: Remembering past derbies gives us strength

FC Schalke 04 are currently preparing for the upcoming Revierderby in Dortmund. Striker Guido Burgstaller is excited for the important game, even if he would prefer having the Royal Blues fans in the stadium as well.

“It’s obviously a shame that there will be no fans in the stadium,” said Burgstaller, who has positive memories from the previous two away derbies. “We can take a lot of positives from past games, because we played well there recently – especially in the 4-4 and in the 4-2 win,” explained the 31-year-old. “Remembering those games will give us strength and confidence to do it all over again.”

We never switched off mentally and worked on our fitness all the time.

The Austrian feels him and his teammates are well equipped for the restart of the Bundesliga. “We were all waiting eagerly for the restart. We never switched off mentally and worked on our fitness all the time,” said Burgstaller, who is aware of how serious the current situation is. “We are following all the guidelines that the DFL have set. We’re all really pleased to have been given the chance to play football again. It’s important that we behave in an exemplary manner and take this situation seriously.”

Burgstaller: You always have a 50-50 chance in the derby

The striker describes the Revierderby as “one of the best games of the year” and is fully aware of “the amazing quality that BVB possesses in their squad. We are desperate to win on Saturday – you always have a 50-50 chance in the derby,” knows Burgstaller, who could play in his seventh game against Borussia Dortmund. “Our fans will be sitting in front of their TVs at home cheering us on, so we want to give our all on the pitch for them!”
