Guido Burgstaller: We’re not concerned about the table at all

A run of eleven games without defeat have meant Schalke have risen to second in the Bundesliga standings. Captain Ralf Fährmann and goalscorers Daniel Caligiuri & Guido Burgstaller spoke about the 3-2 win over FC Augsburg tonight.

Guido Burgstaller und Daniel Caligiuri jubeln gegen Augsburg

Guido Burgstaller:

It was an difficult game as expected. Augsburg are a good side. We remained patient and got a deserved lead but we gave that way. In that part of the game, we made it too easy for Augsburg and we have to prevent that from reoccurring in future matches. Fortunately, we got the third goal. We aren’t concerned with the table. It’s great to be second but there’s a long way to go. It’d be difficult if there were only two games left in the season obviously. We want to carry on this run in Frankfurt which will be tough and to keep our DFB-Pokal hopes alive against 1. FC Köln.

Daniel Caligiuri:

We ended the first half and started the second half perfectly to get a 2-0 lead. It makes it all the more frustrating that we let Augsburg back into the game. Of course the three points are the most important thing but it’s irritating how we gave Augsburg a chance to fight their way back into the game. FCA are in the top half for a reason. We knew it’d be difficult. We should have carried on pushing even when 2-0 up. We knew it was important to win to get into second but FC Bayern are playing in a league of their own. We want to just keep putting in good performances but as you saw tonight we’re far from the finished article.

Ralf Fährmann:

It’s hard to put that second half into words. I’m looking forward to the game analysis tomorrow. We got into a comfortable lead as according to plan but we lost our cool. It felt like every ball was just coming straight back at us. To still win though shows our great character. In my eyes, we’ve made another key step. The Köln game ended 2-2 but today we pushed on and got the win we deserved.
