Heads up, keep working hard

Die Königsblauen had 16 shots on goal in their match against Borussia Mönchengladbach yesterday. A good amount, but there was a downside of course. Only Breel Embolo managed to score with an attractive strike, but the Swiss international’s goal in injury time served only as a consolation, as the Foals won 2-1.

“The last time we had so many chances to score, so many quality chances, was a long time ago,” says Domenico Tedesco. His team were much improved after their 2-0 loss to Hertha BSC in the second matchday, yet still left BORUSSIA-PARK empty-handed. Ralf Fährmann gets straight to the point: “It’s a pretty rubbish situation we find ourselves in. There’s no point in making it sound better than it actually is. When this happens, it often comes thick and fast. We’re not creating enough up front at the moment, and at the back we’re not defending well enough sometimes.”

Die Knappen need to score goals

Daniel Caligiuri shares the same opinion as his captain. “We’ve created loads of chances, but we’re just not scoring goals at the moment,” frets the midfielder. “People have seen that we can be really dangerous. We’re just in a rut right now.”

The main thing for Die Königsblauen to keep doing is to continue working hard, so that results improve. “I’m not going to reproach anyone for not scoring when they have the chance, because no-one does that on purpose. However, you do win football matches by scoring goals,” says Christian Heidel. At the same time, the club’s sporting director emphasises the following: “We’re not panicking despite three defeats now, rather working on it calmly. Still, when you’re on zero points after three games, you’re anything but satisfied.”

We’re just in a rut right now.

Ralf Fährmann: We’re not burying our heads in the sand

It’s important now to be positive looking forward, as Die Königsblauen are already playing again this Tuesday, not in the Bundesliga but in the Champions League. “We’re all still very disappointed at the moment, but the Champions League is the biggest stage in Europe, so of course the team is looking forward to this match, as are the fans,” says Caligiuri. Heidel says that the team have earned these games due to “last season’s performances. Of course we’re looking forward to the clash with FC Porto.”

It’s important to go into the game with clear heads. “It doesn’t help when it’s all doom and gloom and we’re burying our heads in the sand,” says Fährmann. He adds: “We need to keep our heads up and continue to work hard. I’m always focussed on the next game, which in this case is against Porto. We’ve got to put on a good performance to give us some self-confidence going into Saturday’s game against Bayern.”
