A highly deserved point

It was a very hard day’s work for the Royal Blues. From the 12th minute in Schalke’s 1-1 draw with Borussia Mönchengladbach, Schalke were down to ten men as Nabil Bentaleb was given his marching orders. Things seemed to get from bad to worse as Borussia opened the scoring after half an hour but the Knappen fought back to not only equalise but looked the more likely side to win the game.

“I’m very satisfied with our performance,” said Leon Goretzka. “I’m less happy about the result though.” The midfielder wasn’t the only one with that mindset after the full-time whistle. Despite being a goal and a man down, S04 fought their way back into the game and made a number of chances in the second half to win the game. “The win was there for the taking,” said Daniel Caligiuri. “We wanted to win but when you’re playing with 10 men for 80 minutes, you can be happy with how we played today.

Tedesco: We can be proud

The reason behind the team’s performance was their solidity in defence. Ralf Fährmann was rarely tested and the man advantage could hardly be noticed. “We said to ourselves in the dressing room that: ‘If any team can do it, it’s us!’” said Goretzka.

As well as being solid defensively, the Royal Blues caused problems in attack for the Fohlen and Domenico Tedesco was very pleased with his team’s showing. Tedesco: “We learnt our lessons from recent weeks.” The head coach also believes the hard-fought result will give the team continued belief.

A lift which the Knappen will intend to use to propel themselves into next season’s Champions League. After the draw, there is a six point gap between Schalke and fifth placed Bayer Leverkusen. Schalke’s remaining fixtures are a trip to the WWK Arena to face FC Augsburg before ending the season with at the VELTINS Arena as Frankfurt come to town and the Knappen aim to get revenge for the DFB-Pokal semi-final defeat.
