Hee Chan Hwang: I can hardly wait to play at home
Hee Chan Hwang has quickly settled in at S04 in every respect, and he shone on his competitive debut against 1. FC Union Berlin, providing the assist that wrapped up the 3-1 win. “We’ve started well,” said the new signing. “But it’s not enough to just do that for a week or two games. We need to continue it all season,” he explained. The 30-year-old is already focusing on the game against SV Elversberg (20/9) at the VELTNIS-Arena.
Hwang has already been eagerly awaiting his VELTNIS-Arena debut for almost two weeks now: “I can hardly wait to play at home in front of our fans,” emphasised the attacker. He was clearly impressed when speaking about the brief taster he got shortly after his arrival in Gelsenkirchen. The South Korean had the chance to soak up the atmosphere during this season’s first home game against FC Bayern München. “The atmosphere was really impressive; I’ve never experienced anything like it before.”
The striker, who also has 24 Premier League goals for Wolverhampton Wanderers under his belt, has been impressed since day one by the special sense of togetherness at Schalke. “I’ve felt really at home here ever since my talks with head coach Miron Muslic and my first team training session. I can feel a really positive energy here – the club and the fans are great.”
My own personal goal is to win as many games with the team as possible.
South Korea international Hee Hwang Chan wants to use his experience to reflect that energy both “on and off the pitch”. He benefits from Miron Muslic’s style of play, which suits his strengths perfectly. His shirt number also seems fitting, with Schalke legends such as Raul having worn the number 7 in the past. “In my own way, I’m trying to have a similar influence to him,” said Hwang with a grin.
Ultimately, Hwang is focused on one thing: “My own personal goal is to win as many games with the team as possible.” The next opportunity to do so comes against fellow newly-promoted side Elversberg. “Every game in the Bundesliga is difficult, but I believe in us as a team. When we give it our all, the results will follow.”
