Cedric Brunner: That sort of performance will get brutally punished in the Bundesliga

No points for the Royal Blues this weekend: On Saturday (08.10) Schalke were clearly beaten by Bayer Leverkusen 4-0. After the game in the BayArena, both head coaches as well as Leo Greiml and Cedric Brunner expressed their thoughts on the game.

Bayer Leverkusen - FC Schalke 04

Frank Kramer:

We were the inferior team today. Too often, we were  unable to defend against Leverkusen’s pace and tempo. In possession, we weren’t decisive enough to the point where we got caught on the counter when we lost the ball. We didn’t implement our game plan and therefore we deserved to lose. Now, there are things that we clearly have to analyse.

Xabi Alonso:

We are happy. We didn’t have a lot of time with the team after only two days, but the players understood what we wanted from them and how we wanted them to play. It was a complete performance today, offensively and defensively. I think that we can still improve a lot of things. We have spoken about some concepts and the players have understood them. It is a good start for the road ahead.

Leo Greiml:

We are all really disappointed. We obviously hoped for better today. We came into the game with a good feeling and wanted to take some necessary points back home with us. We weren’t calm on the ball in the first half, which is something we had planned to be. Unfortunately, we didn’t implement that today. We were calmer in the second half and played somewhat better, but that did nothing to limit our clear defeat.

Cedric Brunner:

We imagined that going completely differently. We knew that Leverkusen had a lot of pace up top. We were too naive in defence. Now we have to travel back home off the back of that 4-0 defeat, which is something the fans don’t deserve. We have to move on from this as quickly as possible. We wanted to make it a close game, to win our tackles, chase the opponents down and be far more compact. We didn’t do that for long stretches of the game. We have to stop this naivety in defence as quickly as possible. That sort of thing gets punished brutally in the Bundesliga, like we saw today.
