Jochen Schneider: Football becomes insignificant at a time like this

The 1-1 draw between Wolfsburg and Schalke on Wednesday evening (18/12) wasn’t the most important for those involved after the game. This was due to the fact that a 41-year-old Schalke fan collapsed on the way to the ground and later died in hospital, according to the police.

„It is not possible to talk about football,“ said Head of Sport Jochen Schneider after the game, who praised both fan camps for stopping support during the game. “Great respect to the fans of Schalke and VfL Wolfsburg as well as to those responsible at VfL who did not complete their supporting program after the game as planned, but instead stopped out of respect for the deceased. Football is taking a back seat, our sympathy goes to the family and their relatives. ”

Head coach David Wagner was also reluctant to discuss the game. “All our thoughts are with those affected by tonight’s events. Tonight has shown us that football isn’t the most important thing in the world,” stressed the 48-year-old at the post-match press conference.
