Matchday 23 didn’t quite go to plan for the Royal Blues. The 5-0 defeat to RB Leipzig will certainly have hurt and the disappointment around the ground was huge, but the relationship between the players and the fans never deteriorated. Right-back Jonjoe Kenny was deeply impressed: "The response from the fans was incredible."

Not only during the game, but after as well, the Schalke fans really got behind the players, despite the poor result. The walk up to the Kurve was followed by minutes of applause and encouraging chants, with the players visibly touched by the support. The fans and team both demonstrated how the Royal Blue community rallies behind its own – in good and bad times.

„The club and we players have to keep showing how happy we are to have fans like that,“ said Kenny after the game. „They supported us over the entire season and always showed us that they were behind us.“ The Englishman knew how poor the performance was, especially as far as the second half was concerned: „We just weren’t good enough. If you don’t play at your best, teams like Leipzig will punish you every time. ”

Now it is up to the miners to get the defeat out of their heads quickly, because with 1. FC Köln (29/02, 15:30) on the way, it won’t be getting any easier for them any time soon. „It will be difficult, yes. But all we can do now is work hard and train to get back to our level from the first half of the season,”said Kenny.
