Loris Karius: We are one team, which is what makes us strong

“My job is to project a sense of calm and to be there when I’m needed,” said Karius, who made brilliant saves to deny Nathaniel Brown from close range (13’), Michael Olise with his foot (58’) and to tip Harry Kane’s long-range shot over the bar late on (87’).

“Of course, you always need a bit of luck as well if you want to take points off of Bayern, because they have a lot of individual quality,” said the shot-stopper. “You have to be at the top of your game at all times, otherwise every mistake will be punished mercilessly.”

Despite receiving plenty of praise from those around him after the game, the 33-year-old doesn’t want the focus to be solely on himself. Instead, he prefers to highlight the team’s performance. “We are one team, which is what makes us strong,” he said.

Schalke’s outfield players put in a tireless shift to prevent Bayern from creating many chances. “Hats off to the lads for the effort they put in. They ran and ran until they couldn’t any more – that’s exactly who we are. That’s what defines us at Schalke. We play right until the end.”

Karius added that the point against Bayern will be able to serve as a source of strength for the side ahead of their upcoming games: “We’re able to gain confidence from this game and now we want to go to Berlin and take points from that game as well.”
