Thomas Reis: Put things right and come back stronger

FC Schalke 04 were relegated to the second division after defeat in Leipzig on Saturday afternoon (27/5). Thomas Reis not only reflected on the 90 minutes after the game, but also looked ahead to the future. RB coach Marco Rose, Gerald Asamoah and captain Danny Latza also gave their thoughts after the game.

Thomas Reis:

Leipzig made life difficult for us, they were really up for it right from the first whistle. We tried to stop them playing their game, but didn’t manage it early on and were therefore 2-0 down. I have nothing bad to say about my team after that. Today’s game just summed up this season. We weren’t relegated just because of this match. I would like to thank our fans for their world-class support. Whoever works for Schalke 04, knows the club and has been in Gelsenkirchen a lot, knows that you have to graft and work hard. I’ve tried to do that with the team to show the fans that we’re big one family and to perform as best as we can. We managed to do that in the second half of the season, even if we didn’t achieve our main target. I’m sorry for the fans, but I know that we can correct what’s happened today and come back from this together with our fan base. We now need to deal with what’s happened and come back stronger.

Marco Rose:

We wanted to finish the league season with a good game so that we could go into the DFB-Pokal final on a high. We also wanted to help Christopher Nkunku finish as top goalscorer – we managed to do both these things. We will now prepare for the final in Berlin and do all we can to beat Eintracht Frankfurt. I would like to wish Thomas Reis and FC Schalke 04 all the best for next season. The club belongs in the Bundesliga and had an incredible second half of the season. My opposite number has done some fantastic work. Schalke challenged us today, it was an open game. We were good from counter-attacks when Schalke went for a third goal.

Gerald Asamoah:

We had hope, even if we knew it would be tough. The way the lads fought back from setbacks was typical of our whole season. They showed today that they can match a Champions League side. Our fans recognised that the players gave absolutely everything for the club. They showed their appreciation for them for several minutes after the game, despite our relegation. The players can be proud that the fans respected their performances in the second half of the season. There is a real sense of togetherness at the club and that’s how we managed to have such a good second half of the campaign. Our fans will provide us with lots of energy again next season. We know what to expect in the second division. We will work hard and put together a team with the ambition of coming straight back up again. Our coach Thomas Reis has managed to get the lads behind him with his approach. They have understood his vision.

Danny Latza:

I’m really sad, this season has ended in such disappointing fashion for us. I need time to come to terms with it. Our fans’ passion carried us over the past few weeks and months. We wanted to either stay up or finish in the relegation play-off position together with our supporters, something we unfortunately couldn’t manage. I’m still thankful for the fantastic support, it’s what makes Schalke so special.
