Have to make better use of chances against good opponents

The draw which felt like a loss against 1. FC Köln left a bitter taste in the mouth, but the lessons have been learned and the team has moved on. Up next for Schalke 04 is a meeting with Borussia Mönchengladbach in the Veltins-Arena on Saturday (Kick-off: 15:30 CEST).

As per usual, the day after the 2-2 draw with Cologne was used to review the previous day’s performance. “We took the team through the parts of the game which we needed to do better in,” said Domenico Tedesco, who was fairly satisfied with the way in which his team went about things. “We played very well in Cologne and created a lot of chances very quickly. The one criticism we had was that we were simply too wasteful.” This wasn’t just the opinion of the coaching staff, however, but also of the team itself. “That’s behind us now. The team is fully focused on preparing as best we can for the Gladbach game.

Offensively strong Gladbach

Gladbach have fought themselves through a difficult second half to the season, although they have started to regain their confidence lately – not least in their most recent 3-0 win over VfL Wolfsburg. “They played very well last weekend,” praised Tedesco of the Foals, who currently lie in eighth place with 43 points. “They’ve suffered through a lot of injuries this year and it seems they’re getting back to full strength now – especially in attack. They’ll be a tough opponent.”

The coach also warns his side to be wary of their individual talent: “They have a lot of good players. Lars Stindl is a Germany international for one. He is the brains behind their attack, because he can find space and utilise it. They also have some real wingers in Thorgan Hazard and Jonas Hofmann. They’re three players who can kill you in one-on-ones.”

Embolo to miss out

On his side, Tedesco will be without Breel Embolo for the game on Saturday. The Switzerland international has to sit out due to a muscular issue. “He’s pulled it badly, almost to the extent of a full strain,” explained the 32-year-old. “We hope and believe that he’ll be back with us in the coming weeks. We have to monitor him from day to day.” Also questionable is Max Meyer. The midfielder had to leave training early on Wednesday due to a problem with his foot and tests will reveal what the extent of the injury is. “Other than that, all players are available.”
