Manuel Baum: Good reaction to going behind

Following Sunday evening's 1-1 draw at the VELTINS-Arena, both coaches spoke of a deserved point for their teams. Steven Skrzybski saw the draw against his old club Union Berlin as a step in the right direction. schalke04.de brings you his post-match comments, as well as those from Manuel Baum and Union head coach Urs Fischer.

Manuel Baum:

A point is fair for both teams. You need to consider the game from different perspectives. From a passion, fight, running and sprints perspective, we put in a great performance. The reaction after going behind was also good. We weren’t really affected by the goal like we had been in previous games. But we also know there is room to improve in terms of the quality of our play. We’re not too happy with our build-up, the pressing structure also wasn’t always ideal. There are still a few things to iron out. Which is why it’s even more important that we at least show fight and leave our hearts on the pitch in order to experience the small wins on the pitch.

Urs Fischer:

We had to work hard to get the point. I’m not unhappy with the result in the end. It was an even match, but I think we had the better chances. When we took the lead, it was fully deserved, but Schalke upped their game after that. The team defended well, though.

Steven Skrzybski:

The game and the result is a step in the right direction. We showed as a side that we have character in the way we got back up after going behind. We really wanted to force a winner after we equalised, but we couldn’t manage it unfortunately. We need to keep working hard. With the grittiness and fight we showed in the second half, I’m sure that a win isn’t too far away.
