Manuel Baum: We had no control in the first 25 minutes

Head coach Manual Baum and Wolfsburg’s head coach Oliver Glasner spoke to the media after the Wolves won 2-0 in Gelsenkirchen on Saturday (21/11). Suat Serdar also looked back on the 90 minutes.

Manuel Baum

Manuel Baum:

We came with a plan and felt good going into the game. But in the first 25 minutes, until Wolfsburg made it 2-0, we didn’t have a chance and we had no control at all. We moved from five at the back to a four-man defence after that and it worked a little better. We weren’t dangerous enough with the ball in the first 25 minutes, and when Wolfsburg were on the attack, we weren’t able to close the space. They were able to play past us in the centre and on the wings – we were often chasing after them. At half time, we obviously spoke about what we wanted to do in the second half. We had to do more. The effort was there, but the execution was poor today. We’ll work hard looking back at this game and we won’t kid ourselves.

Oliver Glasner:

Credit to the boys, it was a top performance. We played brilliantly in the first 35 minutes. I’m pleased at how much the team relished it and how quickly we played. We also changed positions really well. Schalke changed formation after that and were able to put us under more pressure. That made the game more even. Over the 90 minutes, my side put in a great performance.

Suat Serdar:

Lots of players are lacking confidence after such a long winless run; we need to get that back by winning individual battles. We were asleep in the first half hour, and we were too often two steps behind. It was a bit better after we changed formation, but there’s still a lot of room for improvement. We had a couple of chances before and after the break, and we have to score there to get some momentum and get back in the game.
