Manuel Baum: We wanted the three points for Mark

Mark Uth’s health was the most important thing after the final whistle on Sunday in Augsburg (13/12). Coaches Manuel Baum and Heiko Herrlich spoke about the game in the WWK Arena, while captain Omar Mascarell and goalscorer Benito Raman also gave interviews on the 2-2 draw.

Manuel Baum

Manuel Baum:

Considering the circumstances, Mark Uth is doing well. It looks like he suffered a concussion. As a coach, you are simply powerless in a situation like that. You can only pray that it’s nothing serious. I was on the pitch and saw Mark. He was covered in blood but had his eyes open. Both medical teams – ours and Augsburg’s – reacted really well in this situation.

Manuel Gräfe also dealt with the situation really well as the referee. He asked us if we wanted to continue playing. As a team, we decided that we wanted to get the three points for Mark. It’s frustrating that we didn’t manage that in the end and conceded a late goal in added time. Despite that equaliser, we’ll take the positives. We put in a decent display considering the situation. The team got stuck in and gave their all. One thing is clear though: we need to concentrate for 90+ minutes. We lost a tackle which we shouldn’t have and this led to their equaliser.

Heiko Herrlich:

We’re obviously very pleased that we got the late equaliser. But we’re all thinking about Mark Uth’s health. It was awful to witness. We were visibly distressed just like the Schalke staff and players. I’m glad that he’s doing well in the circumstances.

Omar Mascarell:

It shocked us all when Mark was injured on the ground. Lots of thoughts run through your head in that moment. The referee asked us if we felt we could we play on, but we decided to stay and fight for Mark on the pitch. During the game we were relieved to hear that he’s stable and conscious. It really put us at ease hearing that. On behalf of the whole team, I wish Mark a speedy recovery. It’s frustrating that we didn’t manage to get the win – we were so close. I’m certain that we’ll finally get our rewards in the next few games.

Benito Raman:

I knew when Mark hit the floor that something wasn’t right. It wasn’t nice to witness. Luckily, Mark is doing well considering the circumstances. We would’ve loved to get the win for him. We were leading 2-1 and then Nassim and Can had good chances to finish it off. Not holding out for the win really hurts.
