Manuel Baum: We’ll get through this situation together

After his first match as head coach of the Royal Blues, Manuel Baum spoke to the media about the 4-0 defeat in Leipzig (3/10). Salif Sané and RB Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann also offered their thoughts.

Manuel Baum:

Everyone could see that we came up against a really good Leipzig side. We’re obviously very disappointed because we didn’t play well enough throughout the game. We were too late to the ball when pressing, as you could see with the goals we conceded. It didn’t work. When we did win the ball, we gave it away again too quickly. We also weren’t courageous enough in possession. The players’ heads went down at 1-0 and they started to doubt themselves again. To be successful, we need to find a way to play with confidence and the players have to take responsibility on the pitch. I’m positive looking to the future, because I’m excited to find ways of getting out of this situation with the players.

Julian Nagelsmann:

We showed that we’re really hungry to be successful. If we’d had a better killer instinct, we could’ve scored even more goals. It was key that our gegenpressing was so good. Our quality stopped Schalke being able to play. We deserve the victory.

Salif Sané:

It’s not going well for us at the moment. We need to do better, we all know that. Manuel Baum told us that we need to look to the future positively. He believes in us and our ability. We’re a team and we stick together – what we need is something to celebrate. I had a scary moment myself alongside the defeat today. I was worried for a second in the second half that I’d injured my knee again, but everything is ok.
