Marius Bülter: The fans really pushed us on

Frank Kramer’s first home game as head coach of Schalke was an eventful one. Alongside Gladbach boss Daniel Farke, he spoke to the media after the game. S04 strikers Marius Bülter and Simon Terodde also gave their thoughts on the 2-2 draw.

Frank Kramer:

It was an intense game. We started well and were aggressive. We had a lot of shots in the first half. We played well until the 60th minute, knocked the ball about well and had a chance to make it 2-0. We became too passive as the game went on though, and a team like Borussia Mönchengladbach will always take advantage of that. We threw all we could at them after conceding twice. It was important to react positively and believe we could get something right until the final whistle. Our fans deserve a lot of praise this evening, they’re simply amazing. Their support is simply out of this world. We need this passion and it really gives us strength.

Daniel Farke:

Today’s game showed perfectly why FC Schalke 04 belong in the Bundesliga. The atmosphere here at the VELTINS-Arena was fantastic. They started really well, were compact, got stuck in and looked to break on us. Despite having more possession in the first 20 minutes, we failed to create any proper chances. We got better after that and then had some opportunities too, but it was exactly during this period that we failed to defend a counter-attack properly and then conceded out of nowhere. My team put more and more pressure on in the second half and deservedly took the lead in my opinion. Conceding an equaliser in injury time is naturally gutting. I’m still really satisfied with our performance and start to the season. Four points from two games is a good return, even if we’d rather have six.

Marius Bülter:

You’re obviously pleased as a team after equalising to make it 2-2 in the last minute, however, conceding two goals in the space of a few minutes was disappointing and it really hurt us. We thankfully found the right response. I think we more than deserved a point when you look at the full 90 minutes. The fans pushed us on and that really helps us out on the pitch. We all know that we can only reach our goals together. I have practiced penalties a lot in training, although it’s a totally different situation in a game, but I was able to deal with the pressure. Simon had already gone off so I took it. The bench said that I should and I felt comfortable and wanted to take on the responsibility.

Simon Terodde:

Of course you want to win the game when you’re leading in the 70th minute. I’m happy that we could still get a point after conceding the two goals, particularly because we could have been 3-1 down, so we’ll gladly take the point. We had to work really hard against a good side who are particularly good at keeping the ball. I gave my absolute all and eventually had to signal to the bench that I couldn’t carry on. My preparations for this game weren’t ideal and I simply had nothing left to give. Sometimes you just have to be honest so that someone fresh can come on. The scenes after the game were incredible once again. The support of our fans gave me goosebumps – throughout the game, not just after the final whistle.
