Matija Nastasic: I’ve waited a long time for this goal

Matija Nastasic’s teammates have pointed out more than once that it was about time he finally scored his first Bundesliga goal. The matter has even been brought up several times in interviews. This is all a thing of the past now, with Nastasic getting his goal on his 87th appearance in Royal Blue colours last Friday.

The goal in the 84th minute was extremely important, with the defender securing at least a point for the Royal Blues after a stuttering performance in the Max-Morlock-Stadion. “I’ve waited a long time for this goal,” says Nastasic, who had previously only ever scored in the DFB-Pokal for Schalke.

We were anything but pleased.

The defender wasn’t really able to properly celebrate after the full-time whistle: “All in all, we were anything but pleased, as we really wanted to win, because the game was very important to us.” Nastasic goes on: “It was not our day. We’ve got to analyse the things that didn’t work out for us and do them better against Hoffenheim. It wasn’t down to our preparation ahead of the Nürnberg game. We were well set-up and had trained well all week.”

Admittedly, in the current situation, it’s not easy to treat every game like a final. At the end of the day though, one thing is crucial: “We’ve got to keep on working hard these next few days.”
