Matriciani wins Bundesliga "Rookie of the Month" award

FC Schalke 04 defender Henning Matriciani has been voted as the Bundesliga’s “Rookie of the Month” for March. The 23-year-old beat Matthijs de Ligt of Bayern München and Dion Beljo of FC Augsburg to the award. The trio were nominated based on their strong performances in the last month.

Alongside German football fans, the clubs competing in the top flight and a panel of Bundesliga experts were eligible to vote for „Rookie of the Month”. Matriciani, who made his debut for Germany U21s on Tuesday (28/3), has followed in the footsteps of teammate Tom Krauß, who picked up the award in February. 

To be eligible for the award, players must meet several criteria. They must be younger than 23 on Matchday 1 of the season, they cannot have started a Bundesliga match in previous campaigns, and if they had made appearances off the bench in Germany’s first division, their game time cannot have exceeded 450 minutes.
