Matthew Hoppe named Bundesliga’s ‘Rookie of the Month’ for January

It’s been some start to the year for Matthew Hoppe. The American scored his first goals in the Bundesliga, signed his first professional contract and has now been voted as the Bundesliga’s ‘Rookie of the Month’ for January. The 19-year-old beat off competition from SC Freiburg’s Ermedin Demirovic and Arminia Bielefeld’s Ritsu Doan to win the vote.

The nominated trio were chosen on the back of their statistics over the past month (including goals, assists and challenge success rate). Fans then had the chance to vote for their favourite player, with clubs and selected Bundesliga experts also given the opportunity to have their say.

Only certain players are able to win the ‘Rookie of the Month’ award. A nominee must be younger than 23 on matchday 1 and cannot have started a Bundesliga game in previous seasons. On top of that, the player cannot have played more than 450 minutes in the division prior to this campaign.
