Max Meyer: We hoped for more

Max Meyer covered a staggering 12.31 kilometres on Saturday; the most distance of all the players on the pitch, and not for the first time this season. However, his efforts were unrewarded as he and his teammates suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Leipzig.

The midfield dynamo had this to say after the match: “We were obviously hoping for more, the defeat was unlucky. In the first half we had the better chances and if we would have scored first, it might have turned out differently.”  In fact, before the break the Royal Blues largely kept the Saxons at bay, with the hosts only managing to create two threatening opportunities, and being successful once.

In the dressing room, the team adjusted their approach for the second half. Meyer said, “We started very well after the break, we built up pressure and deserved our goal. And once we did equalise, we were right back in it.” Therefore the two goals in the 69th and 71st minute were even harder to swallow, although they only had themselves to blame in Meyer’s eyes. “We made silly mistakes, inviting Leipzig to score and they took full advantage.”

Despite the defeat, Meyers remains hopeful for the future and their next test; a home match against Hannover 96. “We really want the 3 points,” emphasised Schalke’s number 7.

The match takes place on Sunday at 18:00 CET at the VELTINS-Arena.
