Maya Yoshida: I always believed in us

Schalke have conceded just one goal from six games in the second half of the season, an impressive feat. On top of that excellent defensive record, Thomas Reis’ side are now unbeaten in six games too after winning 2-0 in Bochum on Saturday (4/3). One key figure has been defender Maya Yoshida, who has started all these matches and been solid at the back alongside Moritz Jenz and in front of goalkeeper Ralf Fährmann.

“We’re more solid with each game and we’re constantly improving as a team,” said the Japan international. “We keep growing in confidence thanks to the clean sheets we’ve had. Opponents aren’t looking forward to playing us at the moment.”

This good run of form has revived the club’s season and given the Royal Blues a realistic chance of survival now. “I always believed in us,” revealed the 34-year-old. “We want to stay in the Bundesliga and I’m certain we will!”

Yoshida is working hard every day to help his side stay in the division. “I’m not just giving my all in training. I’m making sure I’ve got a healthy diet and that I get enough sleep. I’m doing all I can to help me play as well as I can for Schalke.”

Excitement ahead of the derby

Following the win at the Ruhrstadion on Saturday, the full focus is now on the derby this weekend at the VELTINS-Arena. “The atmosphere will be amazing,” praised the defender. “Anything can happen in a derby. These games are always special.”

Yoshida is motivated by the fact that S04’s next opponents have won all their games in 2023. “We haven’t lost in six games and they’re on a great run themselves. Both teams will want to continue their good form. We have a chance of getting a result if we’re solid again and take our chances up front.”
